Since 1990, the nation’s best and brightest student inventors have entered the Collegiate Inventors Competition®(CIC) for their chance to gain feedback from innovation experts and win prizes that will accelerate their progress.
CIC Finalists present their inventions to a panel of Judges including National Inventors Hall of Fame® Inductees and United States Patent and Trademark Office officials. Undergraduate and Graduate Winners are named by the CIC Judges, and a People’s Choice Award, sponsored by Arrow Electronics, is voted on by the public.
Read on to find out who won this year’s $2,000 Arrow Electronics People’s Choice Award and to learn more about its inspiring sponsor.
Meet the 2023 People’s Choice Winner
A total of 15,207 votes were cast across the country to determine our People’s Choice Award Winner. Congratulations to Daniel Collins of Team NucleoTide, representing Duke University!
NucleoTide is a molecular diagnostic platform that uses CRISPR-based biosensors to rapidly identify marine pathogens and harmful algal blooms. With a low-cost, hand-held device that filters and processes water samples, this invention enables lab-free, on-site ocean health monitoring and provides results in less than an hour, offering both economic and environmental benefits.
Thanks to the generous support of Arrow Electronics, Collins walked away from his CIC experience with a valuable prize that will help him reach his goals.

It’s easy to imagine their technologies making the world cleaner, safer and healthier five years out.”

The company’s support makes a real difference for inventors whose groundbreaking technologies will help build a brighter future for us all.
“NucleoTide is a compelling innovation that reflects Arrow’s values in the global technology ecosystem,” Verrengia said. “Arrow believes technology should benefit the many, not the chosen few. NucleoTide can rapidly deliver a wide array of environmental and economic benefits in a novel way.”
