How to Support Your Child’s Mental Clarity

When your mind feels cluttered, it can be hard to make room for innovative ideas and creative problem solving. This is true for both adults and kids. By treating your mental well-being with the same urgency and importance as your physical health and using strategies to improve mental clarity, you can focus on the important things and set a great example for your child.

Feelings of nervousness and overwhelming emotions in children are big mental health challenges and, without help, can keep children from reaching their full creative potential. Below are ways to ensure you’re creating a calming, supportive learning environment at home, which will benefit your whole family.

 

1. Declutter Your Space

Peace of mind comes with a tidy space. It’s challenging to organize your mind if the space around you is cluttered. As you and your child begin to clean up, remember that even the most daunting tasks can be accomplished one step at a time. As the environment around you becomes clutter-free, your mind will follow suit.

Put on an upbeat music playlist or an educational STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) podcast to help your child regain their focus and become more confident in their ability to accomplish needed tasks by removing stressful distractions.

 

2. Get Plenty of Sleep

When feeling overwhelmed with to-dos, it can be easy to miss sleep trying to catch up — but your creativity and ability to solve problems will likely suffer.

Give your mind time to recharge by getting some much-needed snoozing, and make sure your child does the same. Your mental and physical health will thank you for it!

 

3. Take a Walk

A sure way to clear your mind is to step outside and enjoy the soothing sights and sounds of nature. Taking a stroll in a local park, along the beach, or even through your neighborhood can be beneficial for your family’s overall health.

The American Psychological Association explains that spending time in nature, as well as feeling connected to nature, can boost your mood and improve your well-being.

 

4. Make Time for Relaxation

Like exploring STEM, practicing relaxation methods can encourage observation and mindfulness. Strategies like journaling, calming breaths and getting in tune with your senses can soothe your mind.

You can help your child practice paying attention to all five senses and encourage them to write out their feelings. Putting pencil to paper can help them organize their thoughts in new and creative ways!

 

It’s important to provide a calming, encouraging environment for creativity and innovation to flourish. Continue to check in on your child’s mental well-being, be patient through big feelings and encourage their creative spark.
