Behind the NIHF Scenes

NIHF to Attend the 2020 Toy Fair

On February 22-25, the National Inventors Hall of Fame® (NIHF) will attend the 2020 Toy Fair in New York City in order to stay up to date with the latest trends in the toy industry.

Kim Kerr, Senior Purchasing Manager at NIHF, is thrilled to attend the upcoming Toy Fair, and is looking forward to identifying potential materials to be used in new curricula for our education programs.

“I’m excited to see what the latest trends are in the market and how we can apply them to future programs,” Kerr said.

An important part of the development process

Attending the Toy Fair is a crucial component of our expert education team’s 20-month curriculum development process, and NIHF has sent team members from both our education and purchasing teams to this event for several years.

Each year, the Toy Fair attracts over 1,000 exhibitors and showcases 150,000 toy and entertainment products. Not only does this make it the largest toy trade show in the United States, but it provides conference goers the opportunity to learn the most effective ways to engage children.

For our flagship summer education program, Camp Invention®, we seek toys and materials that help students develop essential STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) skills, as well as build 21st-century skills like collaboration and perseverance.

Creating Camp Invention Elevate

Attending the 2019 Toy Fair was instrumental in helping the education team develop the activities in our brand new 2020 Camp Invention curriculum, Elevate.

For Dr. Erica Matheny, attending the Toy Fair last year inspired her while developing the new Rescue Squad™ module.

“In Rescue Squad, campers learn about the importance of solving real-world environmental challenges,” Matheny said. “At last year’s Toy Fair, discovering miniature animal figurines inspired us to create an activity where kids parachute beavers to repopulate a river environment.”
