Curtiss founded the first company created specifically for manufacturing
airplanes. Determined to develop a water plane for practical purposes,
Glenn Curtiss mounted a plane with floats and attempted to fly
from water for the first time. After much study and experiment,
by January 1911, Curtiss was able to make the flight from water
to land and from land to water. As an aviator and inventor, Curtiss
generated over 70 patents during his lifetime, including designs
for dirigibles, airplanes, flying boats, commercial aircraft,
Navy planes, and the aileron, which is a device for maintaining
the lateral balance of airplanes. He also created the Wasp, which
established world records for speed, climb and altitude.
